The SMC-400 is a single-axis stepper drive manufactured by Kollmorgen for the SMC Motion Stepper Drives series. This device converts low-level control commands into regulated phase currents that advance two-phase stepper motors in indexing tables, miniature conveyor lanes, and pick-and-place heads. By combining power electronics, onboard I/O, and serial communication, it supplies deterministic positioning capability while relieving the host PLC of pulse-generation duties. Its role in industrial automation is to deliver repeatable step increments and maintain position without the complexity of a servo feedback loop.
Control data reaches the board through an RS-232C port, allowing motion scripts to be downloaded from a standard terminal. The input section uses TTL ground-seeking logic and provides 3 dedicated control lines for motion enable, direction, and homing. Four additional general inputs handle auxiliary sensors, and four open-collector outputs report machine states. The fourth open-collector channel is rated for 750 mA, providing a higher-current sink for brakes or stack lights that exceed the capacity of the other outputs. This channel allows the drive to control a larger auxiliary load directly from its onboard electronics.
