The SMC-300 is a stepper motor driver produced by Kollmorgen within the SMC Motion Stepper Drives series. The board serves as an interface between a machine controller and a two-phase stepper motor, converting low-level command pulses into timed winding currents that create incremental rotor motion. By integrating speed, direction, and sequencing functions on a compact board, the product simplifies axis control in pick-and-place systems, small conveyors, and other industrial automation tasks where position accuracy is required.
Designed for direct PCB installation, the drive has a board-level form factor, so it mounts inside OEM control modules without a separate enclosure. Command signals are accepted in a pulse-and-direction format; a dedicated Step input receives edge-triggered pulses, while a Direction line establishes shaft orientation. Both lines operate with TTL logic, and an internal input pulse buffer conditions the signals to prevent timing skew. A status line activates a busy output whenever the translator is executing motion, allowing host processors to synchronize subsequent commands. Phase current is generated by a bipolar chopper topology that supports a continuous winding current of 2 A. An automatic current-reduction circuit lowers the holding current to limit motor heating after motion stops.
Motion profiling resources are contained on the board. Sequencing is handled by an integrated logic block that works with a buffered pulse translator to convert incoming step sequences into precise microstep patterns. For applications that require gradual acceleration, the unit provides an adjustable ramp output. A separate speed output mirrors the translator frequency for external monitoring. A home input lets the controller establish an absolute reference, and the supply section requires only a single power supply, simplifying power distribution. The driver coordinates the direction, step, and winding-current functions during operation. Its busy, speed, and ramp outputs provide real-time operating status to the higher-level control system.
