It offers a microstep resolution of 1/256 steps per step, 16 total inputs, and 8 general outputs. The drive features optically isolated input, optional encoder input, and a serial port with RS-232C interface.
Internal Product Review
The SMC-1500 is a Kollmorgen stepper drive with a bipolar chopper design and a 10 A current rating. Optically isolated inputs and 1/256 microstep resolution support clean signal handling and notably smooth motion control. RS-232C communication makes the SMC-1500 a strong choice for precise stepper applications.

Product Description:
The SMC-1500 is a microstepping stepper motor drive manufactured by Kollmorgen for the SMC Motion Stepper Drives series. Used in conveyors, pick-and-place axes, and small gantry stages, the drive supplies and times the two motor phases so that commanded pulses are translated into repeatable shaft positions. It installs in a control cabinet and acts as the interface between low-level controller step signals and the higher power required by the motor, improving accuracy and reducing mechanical resonance during industrial automation tasks.
Electrical performance centers on a continuous phase current of 10 A, allowing the drive to energize NEMA 34 and 42 motors without saturation. The power stage employs a bipolar chopper topology, rapidly switching the DC bus so coil current rises quickly while keeping losses low. Resolution is adjustable down to 1/256 of a full step, which minimizes low-speed vibration and expands the range of possible positioning increments. The internal power supply accepts fused mains power of 115/230 VAC at 50/60 Hz, eliminating the need for external transformers in most plants. A single busy output can be connected to a PLC input to indicate when a move profile is still executing.
Control and feedback resources are arranged for flexible machine integration. A configuration port conforms to the RS-232C standard, providing access to motion parameters and diagnostics over a simple cable. All command lines are optically isolated to prevent ground loops, and the optional encoder interface accepts quadrature signals at the TTL/5 V CMOS level for position verification. Sixteen digital inputs are available, including twelve user-assignable inputs and dedicated home, limit capture, and stop lines. Eight sourcing outputs allow the drive to trigger relays or indicators. The housing measures 9.250 inches in height and 6.250 inches in width, allowing installation in common 19-inch racks or shallow control panels.
