Product Description:
The SMC-1155 is a stepper drive manufactured by Kollmorgen as part of the SMC Motion Stepper Drives series. This line-operated module energizes motor windings in finely timed patterns so that a hybrid or permanent-magnet stepper follows commanded positions without an external encoder. By accepting digital step commands from a PLC or motion card, it serves as the interface between plant control logic and mechanical motion elements such as feeders, small gantries, or labeling heads.
The drive accepts a single- or two-line supply of 115/230 VAC at 50/60 Hz, and its input is optically isolated to prevent ground loops between control electronics and power circuits. Internally, a bipolar chopper topology regulates motor phase current, allowing full-torque operation while reducing heat in low-speed ranges. Peak output is rated at 10 A, enabling the unit to run midsize NEMA 34 or 42 stepper motors without saturation. Motion commands follow the industry-standard pulse/direction format, so no protocol conversion is required when connecting to common PLC high-speed outputs. Microstepping energy is delivered through a high-voltage microstepping driver stage that improves low-speed smoothness and reduces audible noise.
When tighter resolution is required, the controller can subdivide each full step down to 1/64 step, and its synthesized feedback port provides a complementary synthesized quadrature signal for control systems that need position verification. Automatic idle current reduction lowers dissipation once the motor reaches position, minimizing cabinet temperature rise. The steel enclosure measures 9.250 in high by 6.250 in wide, permitting side-by-side mounting with other power electronics in a 10-inch-deep panel. These dimensions and the line-isolation features simplify installation in existing machines while keeping wiring distances short and electromagnetic interference exposure low.
