The SMC-1150 is a stepper motor drive released by Kollmorgen within the SMC Motion Stepper Drives series. It functions as a power and control interface between a pulse-generating controller and two-phase stepper motors used in positioning axes, conveyors, or metering pumps in industrial automation. By decoding incoming pulse and direction signals, the unit regulates phase current so the motor advances by an exact angle for each command without requiring encoder feedback. This operating method supports repeatable incremental motion in applications that use open-loop position control.
The drive delivers a continuous phase current of 10 A, allowing medium-frame hybrid motors to reach rated torque at high acceleration rates. An internal full-step or half-step selection switch allows operation at 200 or 400 steps per revolution to suit the required motion resolution. Mains power is accepted through a universal input of 115/230 VAC at 50/60 Hz. A front-end rectifier and capacitor bank create the DC bus that feeds the bipolar chopper output stage. The chopper rapidly modulates voltage so the RMS current remains constant while motor inductance filters the waveform, reducing audible noise and heat. Separate pulse and direction terminals accept 5 V or 24 V logic levels, matching common PLC and motion-control card outputs.
Energy use and signal integrity are supported by automatic idle-current reduction and optically isolated control inputs. Idle-current reduction minimizes motor heating during dwell periods, while input isolation reduces interference caused by ground loops. The drive provides eight auxiliary inputs that can gate motion or select presets without additional connections to the host controller. When the main input is unavailable, logic power can be maintained from an offline supply of 90–240 VAC, allowing limit sensors and communication functions to remain active. Command and output signals terminate on a 50-pin ribbon connector, and a synthesized quadrature signal can be routed to a counter card for position verification. The module mounts vertically on a panel and measures 9.250 inches high by 6.250 inches wide. Its narrow cabinet footprint leaves room for airflow along the heat sink fins.
