The SMC-100 is a panel-mounted drive manufactured by Kollmorgen as part of the SMC Motion Stepper Drives series. Designed for four-phase stepper motors, the device integrates current chopping, timing generation, and direction control in one compact block. It converts high-level motion commands into incremental motor movement, supporting indexing tables, small gantries, and material feeders that do not require closed-loop servo feedback.
The drive employs a unipolar chopper architecture that modulates winding energy through high-frequency switching, reducing saturation losses at low speeds. Maximum phase current is limited to 4 A, so thermal load remains within the range of typical NEMA 34 motor stacks while still delivering rated holding torque. Interface electronics recognize TTL logic, allowing direct connection to PLC pulse trains or microcontroller GPIO without additional line drivers. All sections run from a single DC rail because the unit uses a single power supply, eliminating separate logic converters and simplifying field wiring. When used as a stand-alone indexer, the onboard oscillator can source up to 50 mA through its STEP output, which is sufficient to drive optically isolated inputs on downstream counters or follower axes.
The extruded housing measures 120.6 mm wide and only 28.7 mm deep, with a vertical dimension of 92.2 mm, enabling installation in shallow electrical enclosures where front-to-back clearance is limited. Three #6-32 tapped inserts on the rear surface secure the unit directly to DIN mounting plates. A ribbon connector with 10 pins carries step, direction, and enable signals, while the motor header provides phase terminations across 6 pins; a separate three-terminal block accepts the incoming DC bus. The push-pull STEP driver accommodates both sourcing and sinking inputs on external equipment, and the embedded microstep sequencer advances the stator phases with constant electrical spacing to minimize resonance in pick-and-place heads, barcode handlers, and precision metering pumps.
