The SERVOSTAR SC is a digital servo drive manufactured by Kollmorgen as part of the SC Servostar Servo Drives series. It forms the power and control interface between a PLC and a brushless servomotor, supplying the regulated current needed for precise torque, speed, and position control in automated packaging, material-handling, and assembly equipment. The drive’s control architecture combines fast current regulation with onboard motion loops so that axis response remains deterministic even when the host controller issues high-frequency command updates. This arrangement lets the drive handle closed-loop correction locally instead of relying only on external control updates.
The controller accepts two analog command channels, and each input is converted with a 14 bit resolution to maintain fine setpoint granularity. Two analog outputs are generated with 12-bit precision for status or torque feedback to supervisory devices. Internal regulation is paced by a current loop running at 16 kHz, a velocity loop updated at 4 kHz, and a position loop refreshed at 2 kHz. A separate reference generator operates at 1 kHz to coordinate profile calculations. The drive processes incremental or absolute feedback with an encoder interface that tolerates up to 3 MHz of input frequency, which helps prevent loss of edge information on high-speed axes. Soft-start circuitry limits inrush during power-up to reduce line disturbances.
Energy returned by decelerating loads is routed to an internal regen circuit that activates at 390 VDC and can divert up to 200 W through an external shunt when the connected resistor is at least 20 Ω. Overvoltage protection trips the drive at 430 VDC, while an undervoltage threshold of 90 VDC helps maintain logic integrity during brownouts. Thermal safeguarding opens the control path at 80 °C to prevent component stress. During initial energization, the supply can momentarily draw 30 A, after which normal operating current is governed by the configured motion profile.
