The S7720F-SEF2-S3 servo drive is produced by Kollmorgen and belongs to the S700 Servo Drives series. It converts three-phase mains power into regulated current that controls motor torque, speed, and position on automated axes used in packaging, machining, and material-handling cells. By combining fieldbus connectivity, integrated safety, and energy dissipation hardware in one enclosure, the unit serves as the central motion interface between a controller and the mechanical load. This arrangement allows the drive to manage command execution and feedback response within a single motion-control platform.

During operation, the drive can deliver a peak output of 140 Arms for short acceleration bursts, while its continuous rating is 72 Arms. The input section accepts supplies from 208 to 480 V, rectifies them, and commutates the DC bus at 8 kHz to help keep current ripple and motor noise low. Under full duty, it may draw up to 50 kVA, so an 80 A AC supply fuse is specified for feeder protection. Command and feedback data move over the SERCOS II fieldbus, enabling very fast cycle timing for coordinated axis control. Standard or coated printed circuit boards can be selected to match ambient humidity, and an internal fan-controlled cooling option, also available as an expansion card, regulates airflow without changing the housing footprint.

Cabinet integration is simplified by the IP20 housing, overall dimensions of 190 × 386 × 244 mm, and a weight of 13 kg. Regenerated energy is routed through a chopper to a 10 Ω external brake resistor; that path can absorb 8 kW and is safeguarded by a 125 A fuse. Functional safety is provided by the Safety 1-2 card and a dual-channel STO circuit that removes torque without mechanical contactors. These safety functions support controlled drive shutdown behavior while the cooling system manages internal temperature during continuous-duty operation.
