The S7720F-PBF2-S4 is an AC servo drive manufactured by Kollmorgen within the S700 Servo Drives series. As a configurable S700 servo drive, it converts the three-phase mains supply into controlled motor power for position, speed, and torque loops in industrial automation cells. Its internal architecture supports interchangeable option boards so the drive can match machine-level safety, motion, and thermal requirements.

The drive operates over a line window of 208 to 480 V and draws a continuous phase current of 72 Arms, allowing it to energize large-frame synchronous or induction motors. A continuous input demand of 50 kVA sets the upstream circuit breaker and cabling size. Motor ripple is limited by a switching pattern fixed at 8 kHz; this carrier rate balances acoustic output, power loss, and electromagnetic compliance. To avoid overcurrent during rapid commutation, the DC link requires at least 0.61 mH of external inductance. Command data reach the unit through a PROFIBUS fieldbus, and two 9-pin Sub-D connectors simplify daisy-chaining to adjacent axes. A fan controller expansion card regulates the heat sink blower in response to inverter temperature, while a residual 6 V drop across the output stage keeps the current sensors inside their linear region. For environments that require higher chemical resistance, coated PCBs are available.

Heat rejection peaks at 1135 W when the drive is loaded at 480 V, so cabinet ventilation must accommodate that value without exceeding 45 °C internally. Maximum noise remains below 68 dB(A), permitting installation near operator stations. The enclosure mass is 13 kg, and the mounting holes are sized for straightforward handling during installation. Output transients are kept within a dV/dt of 4.8 kV/µs, protecting motor insulation. Up to 30 switching cycles per hour are permitted, and the drive uses an S2-2 safety card in slot 3 together with a dual-channel STO function when a line contactor opens.
