The S7720C-SEF2-PM is a Kollmorgen drive module in the S700 Servo Drives series. It interfaces with SERCOS networks through an F-SMA fiber connector and offers dual-channel STO for safe torque shutdown functions. By pairing with a cold-plate mounting surface, the unit transfers internally generated heat to an external thermal path, which supports cabinet layouts where forced air is limited. The drive governs motor torque, speed, and position in industrial automation cells that require fast cycle times and deterministic communication.

For mains supplies from 208 to 480 V, the converter draws a rated input of 50 kVA and delivers a continuous output current of 72 Arms. Transient demands are handled by a peak current capacity of 140 Arms, which is useful for acceleration or shock loads. Current is pulse-width modulated at a switching frequency of 8 kHz, balancing motor acoustic noise against switching losses. When the DC bus exceeds 900 V, the overvoltage trip removes power to protect semiconductors. The minimum permissible motor inductance at 480 V is 0.61 mH, which helps prevent excessive ripple. Thermal loss at 480 V is 1135 W, and the integrated fan controller enables an auxiliary blower once the internal heat sink reaches 65 °C.

An IP20 housing protects against finger contact and is intended for installation inside an enclosure. The external dynamic-braking path can dissipate 8 kW continuously or up to 70 kW in short pulses through a 10 Ω resistor, allowing fast deceleration without DC bus overvoltage. Position-indexed I/O supports as many as 16 slave nodes, and the X5 encoder port accepts feedback signals up to 1.5 MHz. Voltage rise on motor phases is limited to 4.8 kV/µs to reduce insulation stress, while dual-channel STO removes power from the output stage when a safety demand is issued.
