The S7720C-PBF2-PM servo drive is manufactured by Kollmorgen and belongs to the S700 Servo Drives series. In an automation cell, it delivers closed-loop control of brushless servomotors, translating reference commands from a PLC into precise current and voltage waveforms. By coordinating torque, speed, and position, the unit keeps tooling, conveyors, and pick-and-place axes synchronized with the overall machine sequence. The power section accepts a wide mains window of 208–480 V and is rated for 50 kVA continuous input, feeding a DC link that is switched at 8 kHz. Under nominal operation, it delivers a phase current of 72 Arms, while momentary peaks can reach 140 Arms; the output waveform maintains a form factor of 1.01 to protect motor insulation. Internal losses are reflected in 24 W of quiescent heat and 1,135 W of dynamic dissipation at 480 V, values accommodated by the cold-plate thermal path. The stage imposes only 6 V of residual drop and produces a voltage rise of 4.8 kV/µs across the motor leads. Motors with inductance down to 0.61 mH remain stable at this switching frequency, and the stage maintains low output current ripple.

Control loops run quickly. The current regulator updates every 62.5 µs, and the position loop refreshes every 250 µs. Safe torque off is implemented as a dual-channel STO circuit that disables power within the drive rather than through external contactors. Machine interfaces include two PROFIBUS nodes on 9-pin Sub-D connectors, a 5 V Posi/O rack for incremental position latching, and an expansion slot fitted with a fan controller that commands the cabinet blower once the heat sink reaches 65 °C. At that threshold, the optional cold plate transfers heat directly to a liquid or chassis cooler. Acoustic output is limited to 68 dB(A), supporting compliance with plant noise targets.
