The S7720C-FBF2-S3 is a servo drive manufactured by Kollmorgen and assigned to the S700 Servo Drives series. Acting as the intermediary between a plant’s three-phase mains and a closed-loop servo motor, the unit rectifies, stores, and inverts power so that torque and speed follow commands issued by a motion controller. By integrating fieldbus communication and safety circuitry, the drive reduces panel space and supports high-performance positioning axes in industrial automation cells. This arrangement allows the power stage and control interface to remain in one compact drive package.

For power input, the drive accepts three-phase lines from 208 to 480 V and can process up to 50 kVA without derating. The DC link then delivers a continuous phase current of 72 Arms, switched through the IGBT bridge at an 8 kHz output stage frequency that supports smooth torque production. Hardware protection trips when the bus reaches 800 V, while the internal chopper engages earlier and directs excess energy to an external 10 Ω resistor. Motors must present at least 0.51 mH of inductance at 400 V, and the rectifier path adds only 6 V of residual drop, which helps limit regenerative losses during deceleration.

Safety and thermal behavior are addressed through a SIL CL3 architecture that combines dual-channel STO logic with rugged power electronics. The integrated brake module can absorb 8 kW continuously, and its activation point is coordinated to help limit mechanical overrun. A fan-controller expansion card is available, while the standard cold plate option conducts the 24 W of idle dissipation directly to the mounting surface. Measured noise does not exceed 68 dB(A). Encoder interfaces receive a regulated 5 V secondary supply capable of 300 mA, which supports reliable feedback during rapid deceleration and other dynamic motion changes.
