Kollmorgen manufactures the S7720C-2CF2-S4 servo drive within the S700 Servo Drives series. Designed to interface between a three-phase power source and a synchronous or induction motor, the unit modulates voltage and current so machinery in printing, packaging, or material-handling cells reaches the commanded speed and torque. By embedding current regulators and safety logic inside the housing, the drive is intended for installation in a protected control cabinet. It is suited for applications that need regulated acceleration, steady running speed, and controlled deceleration under varying loads.

The electrical envelope starts with an input range of 208–480 V, allowing connection to low- or high-voltage factory power. Under nominal operation, the converter draws up to 50 kVA and can deliver a continuous output of 72 Arms; this value sets the thermal rating for matching motor cables and contactors. For rapid acceleration, the current regulator supports peaks of 140 Arms, providing additional motor torque without oversizing the supply. At 480 V, the drive dissipates 1135 W of heat, so cabinet airflow or the coldplate must keep components within acceptable operating limits. The power stage includes a DC-link inductance of 0.61 mH to limit ripple, and its 4.8 kV/µs voltage rise is compatible with common motor insulation classes.

An upstream fuse rated at 80 A protects the supply conductors, while the brake chopper trips at 900 V and can dissipate up to 70 kW of regenerated energy into a 10 Ω external resistor. Safety is addressed by the dual-channel STO circuit, which removes torque-forming pulses without cutting main power. The drive also provides eight 24 V logic channels, with each input drawing 15 mA and tolerating up to 30 VDC, while each output can source 100 mA at the same voltage. These I/O points support interlocks and status exchange with surrounding machine controls. Residual DC bus voltage falls to 6 V before service work begins, and a fan-controller expansion card governs auxiliary cooling hardware for cabinet use.
