The S7720A-PNF2-PM is a Kollmorgen S700 Servo Drives series unit intended to command brushless servomotors in automated machinery. Acting as the intermediary between a motion controller and the motor windings, the drive modulates phase current, velocity, and position to meet cycle-time requirements in packaging lines, machine tools, and handling robots. Its cold-plate construction allows direct mounting to a cabinet backplane so thermal energy is transferred to a larger surface, minimizing hot spots during continuous duty.

The drive delivers a rated continuous output current of 72 Arms, allowing medium-to-large servomotors to sustain torque without overheating. To meet that demand, its rectifier can furnish up to 50 kVA of three-phase input power to the DC link. Regenerative energy produced during abrupt stops is absorbed by the dynamic brake stage, which can handle pulse loads of 70 kW. Current is switched by IGBTs operating at 8 kHz; this frequency balances motor ripple against semiconductor losses and audible noise. A DC-bus monitor trips the inverter at 900 V, preventing capacitor over-stress when mains surges or back-EMF raise link voltage.

For sustained braking, the external resistor can continuously dissipate 8 kW, and the converter’s heatsink removes an additional 1135 W during rated motion cycles. Functional safety is provided by the integrated dual-channel STO circuit that disables gate-drive energy without electromechanical contactors. The current controller remains stable with machines using windings down to 0.61 mH, enabling high-bandwidth axes supplied from 208 to 480 V mains. Additional parameters include a 10 Ω brake element, a 5 s peak current window, an output current form factor of 1.01, a 6 V residual voltage drop, a quiescent heat load of 24 W, and the unit permits 30 switching operations per hour.
