The S7720A-PBF2-S4 servo drive is produced by Kollmorgen within the S700 Servo Drives series. It regulates torque, velocity, and position for brushless servomotors in automated machinery, acting as the power conversion stage between a three-phase mains supply and the motor windings. Through monitoring of current and encoder feedback, the unit delivers fast dynamic response so motion axes in packaging lines, robotics, or material-handling cells remain synchronized with controller commands.

Operating from a three-phase input in the 208–480 V range, the drive draws a rated current of 72 Arms and can accept up to 50 kVA of apparent power. Circuit protection is provided by an 80 A AC supply fuse, and the IGBT output bridge switches at 8 kHz to reduce motor ripple torque. Communication with the plant controller occurs over PROFIBUS, while a fan control expansion card manages airflow through the cold plate and coated PCBs. The internal conductors impose only a 6 V residual voltage drop between the DC link and motor terminals, and acoustic emissions remain below 68 dB(A). When the enable input is low, dissipation falls to 24 W, which helps preserve cabinet temperature and standby efficiency.

For rapid deceleration, the integrated chopper routes regenerative energy either into the drive’s heat sink or to an external 10 ohm brake resistor. Continuous brake handling capacity is 8 kW, and short pulses up to 70 kW can be absorbed when operating on 480 V mains. Under sustained high-duty cycles, the electronics themselves dissipate 1135 W (480 V), so cabinet cooling must be sized accordingly. Functional safety is addressed by the drive’s dual-channel STO architecture, which removes torque-producing power in less than a millisecond when either channel is interrupted.
