The S7720A-PBF2-PA is a Kollmorgen servo drive in the S700 Servo Drives series. It is supplied from a three-phase AC line and converts that energy into controlled motor currents for closed-loop speed or position control in industrial automation systems. This chassis version uses a cold-plate heat sink and coated PCBs, so it can be mounted directly to a machine plate while offering added resistance to airborne moisture and contaminants. A plug-in fan-controller expansion card is also available when extra cabinet airflow is needed for nearby components.

The power stage is rated for a continuous motor phase current of 72 Arms, and the input section can accept up to 50 kVA of apparent power without derating. Operation is permitted across a line voltage range of 208 to 480 V at standard utility frequencies. Internally, insulated-gate transistors switch at 8 kHz, which helps balance output current quality with heat generation in the power devices. Dynamic braking energy is routed to an external resistor, and a value of 10 ohms is used to keep DC bus voltage within safe limits during rapid deceleration. The gate drivers are tuned for controlled voltage rise so connected motor windings see lower dV/dt stress during fast switching events.

The built-in brake chopper can absorb up to 8 kW of continuous regenerative power, which supports axes with frequent deceleration and repeated energy return to the DC bus. Peak current overloads are allowed for 5 s, giving the drive short-term torque margin for acceleration and disturbance recovery. Safety integration includes a dual-channel STO circuit that removes drive output energy without relying on contactors in the power path. The aluminum housing, fasteners, and cold plate bring the total mass to 13 kg, which should be considered when the unit is mounted on moving structures or vibration-sensitive equipment.
