Product Description:

The S7720A-PBF2-NA servo drive is manufactured by Kollmorgen and belongs to the S700 Servo Drives series. It regulates three-phase synchronous or induction motors in automated machinery, supplying controlled torque, speed, and position through closed-loop current modulation. By translating motion commands from a PLC or fieldbus into precise motor currents, the unit functions as the drive stage between the control system and the mechanical load in industrial automation cells. This allows the drive to support packaging equipment, conveying systems, and other coordinated machine functions that depend on accurate motor response. It is suited for applications that require responsive acceleration, repeatable positioning, and consistent speed regulation.

Under nominal conditions, the drive delivers a rated phase current of 72 Arms while drawing up to 50 kVA from a three-phase line supply rated at 208 to 480 V. For short acceleration peaks, it can supply 140 Arms, and this transient headroom is paired with a minimum motor inductance of 0.61 mH at 480 V. The internal IGBT bridge switches at 8 kHz, producing a voltage rise of 4.8 kV/µs at the motor terminals with only 6 V of residual drop across the power stage. Excess kinetic energy can be routed to a 10 Ω external brake resistor, and dual 9-pin Sub-D connectors provide PROFIBUS communication with the control network.

The pulse brake channel can absorb up to 70 kW, while continuous dissipation is rated at 8 kW and the maximum brake output is 3 A. A dual-channel STO circuit disconnects the gate drives for functional safety, and an auxiliary 24 V DC supply maintains controller logic and communication when the line supply is off. The unit also includes a fan controller expansion card, and heat is removed by a controlled fan. An optional cold plate with coated PCBs provides additional cooling support for enclosed installations.
