The S7720A-NANA-PM servo drive is produced by Kollmorgen and belongs to the S700 Servo Drives series. It converts incoming AC power, governs current flow, and exchanges real-time fieldbus data so a connected servo motor follows motion commands with millisecond accuracy. By integrating safety and communication hardware in a single chassis, the drive streamlines installation inside machine tools, material-handling stations, and other automated work cells.

This model accepts line supplies from 208 to 480 V three-phase mains and can draw up to 50 kVA when loaded at the top of its continuous range. A power section rated for 72 A RMS delivers steady torque, while an IGBT bridge can surge to 140 A RMS during rapid acceleration. Current is switched at 8 kHz, and the high carrier frequency helps minimize ripple in applications that need smooth low-speed motion. Control inputs include an analog ±10 V channel, 15 mA digital lines, and a 5 V position I/O level for encoder latching. Two onboard network ports support EtherCAT and CANopen without extra cards, and dual-channel STO disables the output stage for safety. A residual voltage drop of 6 V appears across the output transistors, and make-ready or bypass contact paths can switch 500 mA. Up to 30 switching cycles per hour are permitted by the thermal design.

The braking circuit handles 8 kW of regenerative energy and can be supplemented with a 10 ohm external resistor for long vertical moves. With an output current form factor of 1.01, RMS and average currents are nearly identical, which helps simplify motor heating calculations. Base losses are limited to 24 W of quiescent dissipation, and a cold-plate layout with conformally coated PCBs helps spread heat while resisting moisture. Digital outputs can source 100 mA for low-power control functions.
