The S7720A-EIF2-S3 is a panel-mounted servo drive manufactured by Kollmorgen as part of the S700 Servo Drives series. It regulates torque and velocity loops between a motion controller and three-phase motors used in industrial machinery. A fan-controller expansion card is fitted at the factory, and the backplane provides fourteen digital inputs and eight digital outputs for logic signals. The cold plate and coated PCBs allow installation in humid cabinets, while the enclosure is 386 mm tall, 190 mm wide, and weighs 13 kg, providing a compact thermal path.

The accepted mains voltage range is 208 to 480 V, allowing the drive to share bus supplies across mixed plant voltages. Under continuous duty, it draws 50 kVA and delivers a rated armature current of 72 Arms, so power wiring and protective devices can be matched to the load. The IGBT bridge commutates at 8 kHz, which balances acoustic noise and motor ripple during operation. A current overload interval of 5 s allows brief torque surges without exceeding thermal limits. With a minimum motor inductance of 0.61 mH at 480 V, the drive limits peak current ripple, and a residual voltage drop of 6 V helps maintain bus efficiency. Temperature-controlled blowers start when the heat sink reaches 80 °C or when internal sensors register 65 °C, which helps limit internal temperature rise.

All control electronics are powered from an auxiliary bus of 24 VDC, so the drive can keep fieldbus communication active during mains disconnects. For rapid acceleration events, it can source 140 Arms for the overload interval, and the cooling interface rejects 1005 W of heat at 400 V. In safety-critical cells, the integrated dual-channel STO function removes gate-drive energy from the power stage without opening the main contactor. This arrangement supports Category 3 and 4 stop requirements while keeping the shutdown function inside the drive.
