The S7720A-DNF2-PM servo drive is produced by Kollmorgen as part of the S700 Servo Drives series. It regulates synchronous or induction motors in multi-axis automation lines, delivering closed-loop speed and torque control from AC mains. Within an installation, it serves as the power interface between the motion controller and the motor, translating command signals into precisely modulated current.

This model accepts three-phase supply voltages from 208 to 480 V and draws up to 50 kVA under full load. A continuous phase output of 72 Arms supports normal operation, while transient demands can be met with a peak capability of 140 Arms. The output stage switches at 8 kHz, allowing fine torque modulation even on high-speed machines. Two base analog inputs and four base digital inputs accommodate speed references, limit switches, and diagnostic flags, and each digital input reads the 5 V Posi/O signal level. Internal DeviceNet wiring can use a 120 ohm termination resistor and permits cabling of up to 64 nodes so the drive can share status data or receive commands across a distributed fieldbus.

Thermal management relies on a controlled fan mounted to a cold plate, and the same fan can be supervised by an optional expansion card used as a fan controller. During operation, the power stage expels 1005 W of heat at 400 V, so cabinet airflow must be planned accordingly. The enclosure carries an IP20 rating, and safe torque off circuitry provides dual-channel STO functionality for risk-reduced shutdowns. When dynamic braking is required, an external 10 ohm resistor can be fitted, and the drive can absorb 8 kW of continuous brake power without derating. DeviceNet ports are isolated to 500 V, up to 16 slave axes can be synchronized through the internal position bus, and coated PCBs improve service life in humid production areas.
