The S7480C-PNF2-S4 is a digital servo drive manufactured by Kollmorgen as part of the S700 Servo Drives series. In an automation cell, the unit sits between the mains supply and a three-phase servo motor, modulating incoming energy so the motor receives precise torque and velocity commands from a PLC or motion controller. Because the product is supplied as a drive rather than a motor, it focuses on power conversion, protection, and real-time network communication instead of mechanical output.
Its continuous output stage is rated for 48 Arms, so sizing the motor and cabling around this current helps avoid thermal overload. Line-side consumption can reach 35 kVA, indicating the feeder capacity required when the axis accelerates. Short bursts are handled at 96 ARMS/Ø for rapid load changes, and this overcurrent window is internally limited to 5 s, keeping semiconductor temperatures under control. Pulse-width modulation switches at 8 kHz, a frequency chosen to reduce motor acoustic noise while keeping switching losses acceptable. Dual-channel STO is integrated to meet functional safety stop requirements without external contactors. Two RJ45 ports support 100BaseTX Ethernet daisy-chaining, and the optional fan-controller expansion card monitors a remote blower when the application uses panel air cooling instead of the standard coldplate.
The drive’s braking circuitry dissipates up to 8 kW of continuous brake power, or more when a 15 Ohm external resistor is mounted outside the cabinet to avoid recirculating heat. The input range is 208 to 480 V, letting one model serve both lower-voltage and higher-voltage plants. The chassis has IP20 protection, so it must be installed inside an enclosure while still allowing convenient wire access. A coldplate base couples directly to the machine frame, transferring heat without forced air and keeping the 386 × 190 × 244 mm housing compact. Despite the power rating, the unit weighs 10.4 kg, which reduces panel reinforcement needs and makes the drive easier to handle during installation.
