The S7480C-NANA-S4 servo drive is produced by Kollmorgen as part of the S700 Servo Drives series. Within an automation cell, it converts the plant’s AC supply into regulated, high-bandwidth current for precision positioning of servo motors. This model is supplied with a cold-plate mounting option so the associated machine frame acts as the heat sink.

The power section accepts line voltages from 208–480 V and handles a continuous phase current of 48 Arms, allowing it to service mid-to-large frame motors without derating. At nominal load, the converter draws 35 kVA from the mains, and the IGBT bridge is pulse-width modulated at 8 kHz to keep current ripple low. Heat generated in this switching process is routed to an external cold plate whose thermal resistance is only 0.051 K/W, enabling efficient conduction to the machine structure. When the output stage is enabled, the DC link has a residual voltage drop of 6 V, which is negligible compared with the supply range.

During transients, the drive can deliver a peak current of 96 Arms, and cold-plate operation keeps the semiconductor junctions below the temperature limit of 75 °C. At full rated voltage, the internal losses reach 685 W; together with an off-state dissipation of 24 W, this limits the allowable power cycle rate to 30 changes per hour. The safety circuit provides dual channel STO, removing motor power without additional software checks. The plate itself weighs 10.4 kg and is machined to 25 µm flatness over 100 mm, promoting even contact with thermal interface material. A minimum motor inductance of 0.88 mH is recommended for stable current loops, and the drive’s digital outputs can source up to 100 mA for field devices. EtherCAT and CANopen are available on board, so no expansion card is required. Noise emission does not exceed 62 dB(A).
