The S7480A-PBF2-PM servo drive is produced by Kollmorgen and belongs to the S700 Servo Drives series. As a digitally controlled power stage, the unit regulates torque and velocity for synchronous and induction motors used in industrial automation lines, packaging machines, and material-handling axes. Its role is to convert the plant’s AC mains into finely modulated output currents so motion controllers can position loads with precision while meeting safety and efficiency targets for the series.

The drive operates across a mains range of 208–480 V, allowing a single hardware model to support both low and high plant voltages without tap changes. Under continuous duty, it supplies a motor phase current of 48 Arms, while transient demands can be met with a peak of 96 Arms, giving headroom for acceleration or shock loads. System sizing is supported by the permitted apparent power draw of 35 kVA, and inductive stability is maintained because the connected motor must present at least 0.88 mH of line-to-line inductance at 480 V. To limit insulation stress, the output voltage slew is specified at 4.8 kV/µs. These electrical limits guide conductor sizing, fusing selection, and the choice of drive switching frequency for reliable servo performance.

Thermal control is governed by the coldplate architecture, which removes up to 635 W of heat at 400 V and achieves a conduction path of 0.055 K/W from the power devices to the mounting surface. The housing measures 190 mm wide, 505 mm high, and 285 mm deep and weighs 10.4 kg, so panel space and lifting limits can be planned accurately. During operation, acoustic output reaches only 62 dB(A), and idle losses are limited to 24 W. The coldplate may reach 75 °C, and coated PCBs plus the optional fan-controller card help protect the electronics at that temperature. Dual-channel STO is integrated to meet machinery safety shutdown requirements, and the conformal coating further resists contaminants introduced by cooling airflow.
