The SERVOSTAR-640 is a digital servo drive produced by Kollmorgen for the S600 Servo Drives series. It sits between a motion controller and a brushless servo motor, shaping the incoming AC power into tightly regulated current that commands torque, speed, and position in automated conveyors, gantries, and packaging stations. This arrangement lets the controller send motion commands while the drive handles fast current regulation locally, helping the motor respond quickly to changing load conditions. By performing these control tasks electronically, the unit supports precise axis behavior without relying on bulky mechanical adjustment methods.
The drive supplies a continuous motor current of 40 A rms and can deliver up to 80 A during dynamic peaks, permitting aggressive acceleration without saturation. Its IGBT bridge switches at 8 kHz, giving short current-loop cycles that maintain accuracy with low-inductance windings. Machines drawing as much as 30 kVA can be supported, while the housing carries an IP20 rating that limits ingress when the unit is mounted inside a ventilated control panel. Input circuits present 20 kΩ to analog ground, which helps protect connected sensors from leakage currents. The four digital outputs can source 10 mA at up to 30 V for PLC status signaling. Quiescent dissipation is 40 W when the power stage is idle and rises to 400 W at full rating, so cabinet cooling must be planned accordingly.
Support electronics run from a control rail of 24 VDC, protected by a 4 AT fuse that disconnects the bus under fault conditions. Regenerative energy is handled by an internal chopper rated for 6 kW and an external resistor of 15 Ω, preventing DC-link overvoltage during rapid deceleration. After mains removal, the residual bus drops to 5 V, which reduces stored voltage during shutdown. The enclosure weighs 19.5 kg, so the cabinet structure must support the unit securely during installation and operation.
