The SERVOSTAR-603 is a servo drive produced by Kollmorgen within the S600 Servo Drives series. It converts fixed-frequency three-phase power into controlled output for synchronous or induction servomotors. This conversion enables precise speed and torque regulation in automated machinery and material-handling cells. The drive is suitable for applications that require responsive motor control from a compact cabinet-mounted unit.
An enclosure rating of IP20 allows cabinet installation where basic finger protection is needed. During acceleration bursts, the unit can deliver a peak phase current of 6 A rms, while continuous motion is handled at 3 A rms. A rated installed load of 2 kVA indicates the transformer or supply capacity that must be allocated for one drive axis. Current loops are updated every 62.5 µs, so command changes from the motion controller are translated into torque with minimal delay, improving stiffness in high-bandwidth positioning tasks. The drive’s output current form factor of 1.01 keeps the motor current waveform close to sinusoidal, reducing copper loss and audible noise. Input circuits present 20 kΩ to analog ground, minimizing the load on external command sources. The residual voltage drop across the power stage is limited to 5 V, so most of the DC bus remains available for the motor.
Power dissipation at rated current is 40 W, so panel layouts typically provide forced airflow across the heat sink to maintain safe internal temperatures. During dynamic braking events, an internal resistor of 66 Ω absorbs regenerated energy up to 80 W. This resistor helps prevent overvoltage without an external braking module when the drive decelerates light to moderate inertial loads. The power stage remains stable with motor inductances between 12 mH and 75 mH, providing flexibility when matching different motor frame sizes to the same amplifier. The housing has a width of only 70 mm, allowing multiple axes to be mounted side by side while sharing a 24 VDC, 1 A auxiliary logic supply line. Its narrow profile helps conserve lateral space inside control cabinets without changing the required electrical connections.
