The SERVOSTAR-601-AS is a servo drive produced by Kollmorgen as part of the S600 Servo Drives series. It interfaces between a motion controller and a three-phase servo motor, switching power devices in sync with feedback to regulate torque, velocity, and position in automated machinery such as pick-and-place axes or packaging lines. As a drive, it converts the plant’s AC supply into controlled DC and then into a modulated output that follows the command profile generated by the higher-level controller.

An auxiliary control rail of 24 VDC keeps the logic active even when the main power bus is off, and a built-in restart lock prevents unintended re-energization after an emergency stop. The current loop refreshes every 62.5 µs, giving the drive fast torque response, while the position loop is handled by the host controller. Continuous motor excitation is limited to 1.5 Arms, while short dynamic events can reach 3 Arms. At that rated current, the power section dissipates 30 W, and the unit draws 15 W of quiescent dissipation even at idle. Power sizing should allow for a service capacity of 1 kVA; within that range, the residual voltage drop across the output stage is 5 V, conserving headroom for the motor. The housing is 70 mm wide, letting multiple axes share a cabinet rail without crowding.

Internal braking resistors absorb up to 80 W of regenerative energy, keeping the DC bus within limits during deceleration. The power stage tolerates load inductance from 25 mH to a maximum of 150 mH, so it can drive both low-inductance rotary servos and more inductive linear motors without instability. Communication with the motion controller updates every 250 µs, coordinating the electrical and mechanical loops. Physical dimensions of 265 mm depth and 275 mm height fit standard 300 mm enclosures while maintaining airflow paths around heat-producing components.
