Kollmorgen produces the SERVOSTAR servo drive as a member of the S600 Servo Drives series. This digital drive regulates torque, speed, and position for brushless servo motors in industrial automation cells, linking motion axes to PLCs and motion controllers. By combining high-speed control loops with integrated feedback interfaces, the unit converts command references into three-phase power that maintains precise motor performance on packaging lines, pick-and-place gantries, and material-handling equipment used in demanding production environments where uptime and repeatability are critical.
The drive accepts a differential analog command of ±10 V, converted by a 14-bit converter so the control board resolves 16,384 discrete levels before they enter the current regulator. A 40 MHz processor supervises all loops and generates a sinusoidal output waveform that reduces torque ripple. The regulator samples phase current at 16 kHz, and the loop bandwidth is kept below 2000 Hz so stability is maintained when paired with wide-bandwidth motors. Separate velocity processing runs at 4 kHz with a 250 µs update period, giving smooth speed transitions. For host communication, the RS-232 port reaches 19,200 baud, while the internal speed setpoint transmitted over serial lines can be trimmed in 1 rpm increments during operation.
Each current cycle is refreshed after 62.5 µs, so torque demand changes are applied almost instantaneously. Closed-loop control holds long-term speed drift to 0.01%, which suits indexing and printing equipment. The commutation table can step up to 400 Hz, and the feedback decoder accepts encoder signals to 2.5 MHz for fine position interpolation. When a resolver is used, the excitation voltage is 4.25 VAC, and the sensor must present no more than 120 Ω of DC resistance to remain within drive limits.
