Product Description:
The SERVOSTAR-406A-S is a digital servo drive produced by Kollmorgen as part of the S400 Servo Drives series. It conditions bus power and modulates phase currents so that a matched servomotor can follow commanded velocity or position profiles in packaging machines, gantries, and material-handling axes. Because the drive is supplied without an internal power supply, it relies on an external DC bus and 24 V control source, which keeps its housing compact and allows cabinet power sharing between multiple axes.
The control section processes ±10 V references with a 14-bit converter, giving fine current resolution for tight loop bandwidths. Its power stage delivers a continuous output of 6 A rms and can surge to 12 A rms during acceleration profiles; these current limits match motors whose line-to-line inductance must stay between 7.5 mH and 40 mH. Switching devices are clocked at 8 kHz, a frequency that minimizes audible noise while limiting semiconductor losses to 40 W at rated current and 15 W when the drive is idle. Motion commands and diagnostic data move over the SERCOS fiber-optic fieldbus. Forced-air cooling is required, and an add-on fan clips to the heat sink to maintain safe silicon temperatures.
The mechanical envelope is optimized for dense cabinets: width is 50 mm, depth without connectors is 240 mm, and overall height with the auxiliary fan reaches 267 mm. The aluminum chassis carries an IP20 rating, so it must be installed inside a grounded enclosure that prevents finger or tool access to live parts. Net mass is only 1.7 kg, simplifying DIN-rail installation beside other S400 modules. Its compact format supports dense multi-axis cabinet layouts and allows shared airflow paths between adjacent modules.
