Kollmorgen’s SERVOSTAR-406 belongs to the S400 Servo Drives series and functions as a compact, panel-mounted servo amplifier for industrial automation. It converts motion commands into three-phase drive currents so that brushless servomotors can deliver tightly regulated torque, speed, and position. By linking the low-power control layer to the motor’s power stage, the unit supports packaging machines, pick-and-place gantries, and material-handling axes that require deterministic response and repeatable cycle times on a plant floor.

The command interface uses a differential analog channel with an input resistance of 20 kΩ, a conversion depth of 14-bit, and a programmable span of ±10 V; together, these values allow fine scaling of velocity or torque references from a PLC. An internal pulse-width-modulated output stage is clocked at 8 kHz, which reduces audible motor noise and minimizes current ripple. Continuous motor current is held to 6 Arms, while external status relays can switch up to 500 mA through the Btb/Rto contacts. Two optically isolated digital outputs source 10 mA at 30 V for in-feed signals, and overall wiring depth is kept manageable because the housing measures 240 mm from the panel face without the connectors attached.

Dynamic events are handled with a peak current ceiling of 12 Arms, and excess regenerative energy is diverted into an integral brake resistor rated at 33 Ω. The power stage remains stable with motor inductances between 7.5 mH and 40 mH, which supports use with different motor families. Thermal idling losses are limited to 15 W of quiescent dissipation, and the drive occupies 267 mm of vertical cabinet space. An enclosure rating of IP20 permits installation inside a ventilated control cabinet where finger-safe protection is required, while environmental protection is provided by the host enclosure.
