The SERVOSTAR-403M-C is a digital servo drive in Kollmorgen's S400 Servo Drives series. It acts as the power stage between a motion controller and a synchronous motor. By modulating voltage and current, the drive helps automated machinery achieve commanded torque, speed, and position profiles. The device installs on DIN rail inside a control cabinet and is intended for packaging, material-handling, and electronics assembly lines where compact, networked servo axes are required. Its cabinet-mounted format also suits machines that need a small drive package within limited panel space.
During steady operation, the drive supplies a continuous output current of 3 Arms, allowing it to energize midsize servomotors without thermal overload. For short accelerations, it can deliver a peak output of 6 Arms for up to 5 s, which supports rapid indexing or temporary shock loads before the drive returns to its continuous limit. Heat generated by the power stage is removed through convection cooling, so no fan or forced airflow is integrated and cabinet spacing should allow natural air movement. This layout keeps the enclosure simple and avoids integrated forced-air hardware. The housing carries a protection rating of IP20, which provides finger-safe openings but no sealing against liquid.
Control and diagnostic electronics are energized by a logic supply of 24 VDC, which keeps the microprocessor and communication hardware active even when the main power stage is disabled. Because the logic supply is separate from the main power section, communication and diagnostics can remain available when motor power is turned off. Network connectivity is provided through a CANopen interface that follows the motion control subset of the CiA 402 device profile. This arrangement lets the drive exchange standardized process data, status words, and homing commands with PLCs on a common bus. These communication features support coordinated multi-axis operation and standardized data exchange in distributed automation cells.
