Product Description:

The SERVOSTAR-400-M is a servo drive manufactured by Kollmorgen within the S400 Servo Drives series. It interfaces between a motion controller and rotary or linear servo motors. It supplies controlled current and monitors feedback so industrial axes can follow commanded speed, torque, and position profiles in packaging, printing, or material-handling equipment.

An analog command channel accepts setpoints in a range of ±10 V, and these signals are quantized at 14-bit resolution to minimize rounding error before control processing. Torque and velocity loops refresh every 62.5 µs, while the position loop updates every 250 µs; this fast sequencing helps maintain tight following error during rapid dynamic moves. The output stage is pulse-width modulated at 8 kHz, which helps limit current ripple in the motor windings. Four optically isolated digital inputs can latch homing or limit signals, and two digital outputs report drive status to the PLC. Fieldbus communication is available through a CANopen node that supports bit rates up to 1 Mbit/s, and parameterization or diagnostics can also be handled locally through the RS232 Sub-D nine-pin PC interface.

The control electronics are powered from an auxiliary supply of 24 VDC, and the integrated backplane permits as many as 7 axis modules to share a common DC link in multi-axis machines. An IP20 enclosure rating indicates finger-safe protection when the unit is mounted inside a cabinet, and airborne sound during operation remains at or below 45 dB(A) to align with typical plant-floor noise limits. A dedicated brake output delivers 24 VDC at 1.5 A to release or engage motor holding brakes during controlled stops. Mechanical dimensions are compact, with a width of 100 mm and a mass of 3 kg, which helps ease installation on DIN rails or in tight racks without exceeding thermal or weight allowances.

Internal Product Review

  • ‘‘The Kollmorgen SERVOSTAR-400-M is a servo drive with IP20 protection and 24 VDC auxiliary voltage. Control performance is especially impressive with a 62.5 µs current controller cycle and 250 µs position controller cycle. Support for up to 7 axis modules makes the platform a strong choice for coordinated motion systems.’’
