Product Description:
The S403BA-PB is an axis module produced by Kollmorgen for the S400 Servo Drives series. The device regulates one motor axis by generating controlled current sequences for brushless servomotors and is therefore used for motion positioning in automated machinery. Its communication slot is factory-fitted for PROFIBUS, allowing it to exchange setpoints and diagnostic data over the same fieldbus that coordinates other drives. Because the module does not include a power supply, it draws DC-link energy from an external source in the cabinet and passes that bus voltage to its output stage.
The current stage supports a continuous output of 3 A rms and can deliver up to 9 A rms during short acceleration periods. Current commands are refreshed by a control processor operating at 8 kHz; this switching frequency affects the servo bandwidth and the heat generated in the IGBT bridge. The analog reference port accepts signals within a range of ±10 V, provides an internal resolution of 14 bits, and has an input resistance of 20 kΩ. These characteristics allow a direct connection to PLC motion cards without excessive electrical loading. During standby, the electronics consume 12 W of quiescent power, so cabinet ventilation can accommodate light continuous dissipation rather than the thermal load associated with full motor operation.
The power stage is suitable for loads with an inductance between 12 mH and 75 mH; this range keeps current ripple within the design limits while permitting rapid torque changes. An enclosure rating of IP20 indicates that the terminals are finger-safe, but the unit must be mounted inside a protected panel. The housing measures 50 mm in width, 230 mm in height, and 240 mm in depth, allowing the drive to occupy a single narrow slot on a backplate. When the module operates at rated current, its power losses rise to 30 W. The assembly weighs 1.7 kg, which supports installation on a DIN rail or direct mounting studs.
