The S403BA-CA-022 axis module is a servo drive manufactured by Kollmorgen for the S400 Servo Drives series. It converts DC-bus energy into a controlled three-phase output that powers synchronous motors used in pick-and-place gantries, feeders, and index tables. Integrated current, velocity, and position loops let the controller execute tight motion profiles within milliseconds. As an axis module, a single unit occupies one drive slot in a multi-axis rack, simplifying installation in industrial automation cells.
Its analog command interface processes signals with 14-bit resolution and refreshes every 62.5 µs, allowing the drive to follow rapid setpoint changes without overshoot. Four digital inputs and two digital outputs provide discrete signaling for limit switches, drive enable commands, and fault relays, and these circuits use the auxiliary 24 VDC supply rail. The power stage switches at 8 kHz, delivers a continuous phase current of 3 A rms, and can supply 9 A rms during short acceleration bursts. An output-current form factor of 1.01 keeps the RMS and average values nearly identical, minimizing additional motor heating. Motor windings connected to the drive must have at least 12 mH of inductance to avoid overcurrent trips. Quiescent losses remain at 12 W, while full-load switching produces a rated current dissipation of 30 W. The module is supplied without a power supply and connects to a common DC link.
The housing measures 230 × 50 × 240 mm and weighs 1.7 kg, facilitating side-by-side mounting on DIN rails. An IP20 protection rating permits installation inside closed electrical enclosures where finger-safe terminals are acceptable. The design supports motor cables with a total inductance of no more than 75 mH, allowing stable current regulation across common servo motor cable lengths. Passive cooling is sufficient for the stated enclosure size when the drive has adequate spacing for unrestricted airflow inside the cabinet.
