The S403AM-CA is a Kollmorgen master-module servo drive in the S400 Servo Drives series. It regulates torque, velocity, and position for matched servomotors in packaging machines, material-handling cells, and similar automation tasks. As a master module, it also coordinates follower axes over the system bus and provides analog command channels for external motion controllers. Its role is to translate upper-level references into the pulse-width-modulated output required to energize motor windings and recover braking energy through an internal resistor network.

The command interface accepts feedback or setpoint signals with a resolution of 14-bit, and the analog channel tolerates inputs up to ±10 V. These references are sampled by a digital controller that triggers the power stage at 8 kHz, giving fine current granularity and low ripple. Continuous motor operation is supported at 3 A rms, while transient demands can rise to 9 A rms before foldback limits engage. The drive disables switching if the DC bus exceeds 750 V, protecting internal transistors from line surges. A 33 Ω brake resistor mounted on the heat sink absorbs regenerative energy and helps keep bus voltage within safe limits. Thermal loading of the control electronics is 12 W when idle and 35 W at rated current. Motors must present inductance between 12 mH and 75 mH so the current regulators remain stable.

Mechanical dimensions of 100 mm in width, 240 mm in depth, and 230 mm in height allow the housing to fit compact rack installations. The unit weighs 3 kg, which keeps handling requirements low during installation. The internal brake resistor has a continuous rating of 80 W and can absorb regenerative energy without requiring an external dump module in many cyclic-duty machines. The power section works across a mains window of 230 to 400 V, enabling the same model to operate on single-phase or three-phase supplies without tap changes.
