Product Description:
The S403A-CA is a servo drive manufactured by Kollmorgen and assigned to the S400 Servo Drives series. In an automation cabinet, it partners with a matched synchronous motor to regulate torque, speed, and position through closed-loop current control. The unit converts DC bus energy into a three-phase output waveform and offers both analog and digital command paths so motion controllers or PLCs can impose precise trajectories on rotary or linear axes.
The drive supplies a continuous phase current of 3 A rms, while transient load steps can be handled by a peak capability of 9 A rms to overcome inertia during acceleration. Motion commands received on the ±10 V analog channel are digitized with 1.25 mV resolution, and every update is accepted at 62.5 µs intervals so the control loop can respond quickly to changing demand. Internally, the output stage refreshes its PWM pattern at 8 kHz, which helps limit motor ripple current and audible noise. A 20 kΩ input impedance prevents loading of upstream controllers, and the output current form factor of 1.01 keeps RMS and average values closely aligned for motor thermal calculations.
The power section operates from a three-phase supply of 230 to 400 V, and excess regenerative energy can be dissipated through a built-in 33 Ω brake resistor when external braking modules are absent. Inductive loads between 12 mH and 75 mH are supported, giving flexibility in motor selection and cable length. Four programmable digital inputs and two outputs simplify integration with over-travel switches or pneumatic valves. Standby losses are limited to 12 W, while full-load switching raises dissipation to 30 W, which helps with enclosure cooling estimates. The aluminum housing weighs 1.7 kg, allowing direct DIN-rail mounting without additional support brackets.
