In an automation cell, this unit sits between the motion controller and a brushless motor, converting fixed-frequency mains power into variable pulse-width-modulated output while processing feedback. By combining power electronics and embedded control in one enclosure, the drive supplies the precise torque, speed, and position regulation required for packaging lines, pick-and-place axes, and other coordinated motion tasks.
The drive accepts three-phase input from 208 to 480 V and delivers a continuous phase current of 3 A rms. For rapid acceleration or short load disturbances, the output can rise to 7.5 A rms for up to 5 s before returning to its thermal limit. This short burst capability helps a servo axis overcome static friction without oversizing the entire power stage. A carrier frequency of 8 kHz modulates the IGBTs, producing fine voltage resolution and low motor ripple. During braking events, the drive’s 80 W internal regeneration stage converts kinetic energy to heat, and its control board draws only 12 W when idling. Reduced standby loss is useful when axes remain energized for long dwell periods yet must respond immediately to the next production command.
An embedded DSP handles servo algorithms at a velocity loop bandwidth of 400 Hz. Field wiring is straightforward, with two analog command inputs, four digital command lines, and two digital outputs for local interfacing, while a DeviceNet option card links the drive to a higher-level network. Under continuous load, the main heat sink must dissipate 60 W, a figure that guides cabinet airflow calculations. For safety, the integrated STO (Safe Torque Off) circuit cuts motor energy instantaneously when dual-channel signals are removed.
