The 502-03840-04 is a plug-in motion interface board manufactured by Kollmorgen and assigned to the PIC900 Drives series. Installed inside a PIC900 rack, the board conditions analog commands and high-speed feedback so the drive can close position and velocity loops. Within an automated cell, it acts as the link between a host controller and the power section, allowing axis moves, jogging, and execution of stored motion programs. It supports both incremental encoder signals and analog references, giving machine builders a flexible option for retrofits or new machine designs where servo response must be tuned to demanding cycle times.
The board provides 4 analog outputs. Each channel can source or sink drive reference signals for torque, velocity, or position modes. These outputs are generated with a resolution of 16 bits, which keeps command steps fine and helps limit quantization error. Each channel swings across ±11 VDC, allowing compatibility with standard ±10 V amplifiers while leaving headroom for calibration. Update latency is contained within 32 µs, so commanded values refresh in less than one control cycle for most servo loops. When driving an external summing junction, the module can deliver up to ±10 mA @ ±10 V, which is enough to overcome input loading and maintain signal fidelity.
On the feedback side, the encoder ports draw only 22 mA @ 7 VDC, which reduces loading on the sensor’s line driver. Pulse streams are accepted at rates up to 500 kHz, and quadrature decoding maintains edge integrity down to a minimum pulse width of 0.6 µs. Position data is accumulated in a 24-bit up/down counter, enabling direct tracking of ±8,388,607 counts without rollover logic. This arrangement allows the PIC900 axis to capture fast encoder transitions, preserve positional accuracy, and pass stable analog commands to the drive within a deterministic time window.
