The 502-03548-00 digital input module is built by Kollmorgen for the PIC900 Drives series and interfaces machine sensors with the motion-controller backplane. By converting 24-volt field signals into logic-level status bits, it allows the associated drive system to react to limit switches, photo-eyes, and other discrete devices used in automated equipment. This module occupies one slot in the rack and provides galvanically isolated inputs so that noisy industrial wiring does not disturb the control electronics.

At the field interface, wiring lands on a 25-pin card-edge connector with screw terminals. The card offers 16 input points, and each one conforms to IEC 1131-2 Type 1 electrical rules. Standard plant voltage of 24 VDC is accepted, and a protective network caps the circuit at the absolute 30 V limit while permitting up to 7.5 mA at 30 VDC during active states. Backplane demand stays minimal because the internal logic draws only 2 mA at +5 V. Opto-isolators rated for 4000 V peak isolation separate the field lines from processor traces, preventing fault currents from reaching sensitive drive electronics. Input polarity is independent, so sourcing or sinking sensors can be mixed without rewiring.

The discriminator recognizes a logical low whenever the signal level drops to the 5 VDC off threshold, and it declares a valid high once the conductor reaches the 14 VDC on threshold. This window works with debounce circuitry to keep turn-on and turn-off delays within 1 ms, supporting axis homing or interlock chains that demand tight timing. Even if every channel is energized, thermal rise remains limited because total board power dissipation is only 3.6 W. Minimum input current for logic validity is 2.8 mA at 14 VDC, while off-state leakage stays under 0.75 mA. These characteristics help the module read proximity sensors, mechanical switches, and relay contacts without sending field noise into the rack.
