The SERVOSTAR PD servo drive is manufactured by Kollmorgen and belongs to the PD Servostar Servo Drives series. It is a panel-mounted power stage that interfaces directly with motion controllers, converting low-level command signals into high-bandwidth current loops for brushless or brush-type servomotors. In industrial automation, this device supplies the regulated energy and fault diagnostics necessary to keep axes synchronized during positioning, labeling, or palletizing tasks.
Three opto-isolated command channels give the drive 3 digital inputs for enable, reset, or program select, while a single status transistor delivers 1 digital output back to the PLC. The inverter section modulates the DC bus at 16 kHz, and an output filter raises the effective current ripple carrier to 32 kHz, which helps reduce audible noise and improve low-speed smoothness. During power-up, a pre-charge network limits inrush and completes charging within 0.25 s before transferring full line current. The soft-start circuit limits surge current to 30 A, protecting upstream fuses. Control electronics run from a 0.6 A logic supply, and fault signaling is available through a relay rated at 1 A. Line distortion is kept low by a form factor not exceeding 1.01. Installation requires 2.26 N·m of mounting torque, 2.54 mm of side clearance, and 63.5 mm of space above and below the heat sink to sustain natural convection.
Temperature monitoring trips the output when the heat sink reaches 80 °C, preventing semiconductor damage. Even with that protection feature, the drive weighs only 0.55 kg and fits within a compact envelope of 140 × 108 × 51 mm, allowing dense multi-axis layouts on a common backplane. Its small size helps when cabinet depth and overall panel mass are limited. The compact housing also suits installations where several axes must be mounted close together in a confined enclosure.
