The NSM4220 is a brushless servo motor produced by Kollmorgen within the NSM Brushless Servo Motors series. Designed for closed-loop positioning and velocity tasks, the unit converts drive current into controlled shaft torque for pick-and-place gantries, indexing tables, and similar automation axes. It integrates with Kollmorgen digital amplifiers through resolver feedback, enabling precise motion control in compact machinery. Pairing the motor with a compatible servo drive provides responsive acceleration and accurate regulation of shaft position, speed, and torque. The brushless design eliminates mechanical commutation components, reducing wear during repetitive motion cycles.
The motor provides a continuous stall torque of 2.5 Nm, allowing the shaft to hold a load steadily during dwell periods. For rapid moves, peak torque rises to 7.1 Nm, providing additional capacity for brief acceleration demands before thermal limits are reached. The motor has a torque constant of 0.28 Nm/A, so each ampere delivered by the drive produces slightly more than one-quarter newton-meter of torque. Generated back voltage increases with speed at 34 V/krpm, allowing the drive to account for the required commutation voltage at a given velocity. Copper losses are influenced by a phase resistance of 0.77 Ω, which affects current limiting and heat generation during continuous operation. These electrical characteristics support controlled torque production across changing speed and load conditions.
The phase inductance of 2.9 mH helps filter current ripple, supporting high-bandwidth control without requiring excessive switching frequency.
