Product Description:

The NEXTSTEP-240 LRES is a microstepping drive produced by Kollmorgen as part of the NEXTSTEP Microstepping Drives series. It converts line power into controlled phase currents for two-phase hybrid step motors, giving machine axes incremental positioning without the feedback hardware required by servo systems. By translating pulse and direction commands from a PLC into regulated current waveforms, the unit provides precise motion control for pick-and-place equipment, indexing systems, and light machining cells.

Designed for standard plant power, the drive accepts a nominal input of 240 VAC and rectifies it to a nominal internal bus of 320 VDC nominal, which feeds the dual H-bridge output stage. Output current can be set in 0.1 A increments up to the 3.9 A limit, allowing torque scaling across different motor frame sizes. The fundamental full-step angle is 1.8°, and selectable low-resolution modes of 200, 400, 1000, or 2000 steps per revolution further subdivide that increment for smoother motion. Input circuitry recognizes step pulses as short as 250 ns and counts edges up to 2 MHz, supporting high-speed command streams. Brownout protection removes gate drive when mains voltage falls to 100 VAC, and the two-phase hybrid permanent-magnet motor design maintains holding torque when current is reduced.

At the interface level, the direction input requires only 0.4 µs of setup time before the next step, enabling rapid reversals without lost counts. Internal pulse-width-modulated switches operate at 20 kHz, which helps keep acoustic noise low while minimizing eddy-current losses. During acceleration bursts, the supply can reach 500 VA, but an overvoltage circuit trips at 440 VDC to protect components from regenerative spikes. A thermal trip activates at 65 °C to prevent overheating, and the switching bus shuts down if line disturbances exceed the 100 VAC brownout threshold.
