Product Description:

The MCSS08-3232-001 is a motion and I/O controller built by Kollmorgen for the MC Servostar Servo Drives series. As a member of the MC ServoStar MC family, the unit serves as the central coordinator in multi-axis machinery, commanding servo amplifiers and peripheral devices directly from its integrated package. It is intended for assembly lines, packaging cells, and material-handling stations where deterministic positioning across several mechanisms must be maintained without relying on a higher-level industrial PC.

Control performance is supported by a 233 MHz GXM processor that executes motion kernels and PLC tasks for 8 axes in ten-millisecond time slices. Programs and real-time data occupy 32 MB of SDRAM, while nonvolatile parameters are copied to battery-backed NVRAM during power-down. Axis commands are transmitted over a SERCOS optical ring, providing phase-aligned updates between the controller and downstream drives. The front panel provides 23 isolated inputs for sensors such as photoelectric sensors and limit switches. Each input channel is optically coupled to prevent ground loops. The unit has a standalone configuration, so an external rack is not required, and its cycle-synchronous design reduces communication latency.

The controller is supplied with the CPU Upgrade 1 GXM option, which supports extended instruction sets for advanced kinematic transformations and mathematical routines. For machine networks that do not use SERCOS, the controller has 2 SST-compatible fieldbus ports, allowing direct communication with DeviceNet, Profibus, or Modbus gateways. Additional functions, including vision preprocessing, can be installed through a PC-104/PC-104+ connector that accepts up to two mezzanine cards without increasing the controller’s footprint. Output logic is handled by 20 isolated outputs rated for 24 V, allowing actuators and relays to be driven directly. Eight DIP switches support address selection, while five status LEDs provide runtime diagnostic information.
