The MCSS08-3224-001 is a motion controller produced by Kollmorgen for the MC Servostar Servo Drives series. Designed for centralized machine control, the unit issues coordinated velocity and position commands to multiple Servostar amplifiers. By combining real-time processing, fieldbus communication, and axis management in one enclosure, it simplifies installation in packaging, printing, and material-handling lines that depend on synchronized servo motion. It mounts in a control cabinet beside the drive stack and connects through optical links for communication that resists electrical noise.
Real-time motion calculations are handled by a GXM 233 MHz processor that works with 32 MB of RAM for dynamic data and a 24 MB solid-state flash disk that stores application code and system software. An additional 30 KB of nonvolatile RAM retains machine variables across power cycles. The controller exchanges cyclic data with downstream drives over the SERCOS fiber-optic interface, and two duplex fibers support the communication ring. Commands and diagnostic data are also available through two RS-232 ports, while eight DIP switches select the node address and baud rate at startup. The controller provides 23 optically isolated inputs and 20 optically isolated outputs for connecting sensors and actuators without additional relays. Five status LEDs indicate run, fault, and communication states, and two card slots accept optional I/O or fieldbus expansion cards.
The controller schedules motion and logic in up to 256 concurrent tasks, with each task assigned one of 16 priority levels so deterministic loops can preempt background routines. Velocity words are delivered to the drives with 32-bit resolution, allowing precise scaling even at low speeds. The platform coordinates up to 8 axes during a single cycle, enabling close synchronization of line shafts and registration marks. Available processing capacity can support additional monitoring and control routines as machine requirements increase. The task structure allows time-sensitive motion functions to run ahead of lower-priority supervisory operations. This arrangement supports coordinated control across printing, packaging, and material-handling equipment without requiring separate motion processors for each connected axis.
