Product Description:

The MCSS04-3232-001 is a motion controller from Kollmorgen in the MC Servostar Servo Drives series. It functions as the central processor that links drive amplifiers with higher-level automation equipment. By executing deterministic trajectory calculations and coordinating multiple servo loops, the unit supports precision positioning on packaging lines, pick-and-place gantries, and other industrial machines. Its integrated design allows motion commands, machine sequences, and drive communications to be handled by one controller. This arrangement reduces the processing burden on other automation equipment and supports synchronized movement across complex machine axes.

Inside the self-contained package, a 233 MHz GXM processor with CPU upgrade 1 executes motion algorithms for up to four axes simultaneously. The controller can issue new position targets every 250 microseconds, helping to keep following error low during rapid indexing operations. Command exchange with the drives occurs over SERCOS, which provides deterministic 2 kB telegrams and phase-aligned synchronization across the fiber-optic ring. The standalone configuration removes the need for a supervisory PC during normal machine operation. The enclosure contains the control electronics, power supply, and cooling components, which reduces wiring density inside the cabinet. Deterministic communication also allows coordinated axes to receive time-sensitive commands without delays caused by conventional asynchronous network traffic.

The controller carries 32 MB of SDRAM for program variables and buffering, while its nonvolatile RAM preserves parameters when power is removed. A bank of 23 isolated inputs and 20 isolated outputs permits direct connection to field devices, and optical isolation helps prevent ground currents from disturbing encoder references. The unit also provides two SST-compatible fieldbus channels for communication with higher-level PLCs when additional data exchange is required. System functions can be expanded through a PC-104/PC-104+ connector supporting up to two expansion cards, including high-speed capture modules or secondary network interfaces. Front-panel diagnostics include eight DIP switches and five LEDs for node addressing, status monitoring, and visual fault indication. These controls provide immediate access to basic operating information without requiring an external display. The available memory, isolated connections, expansion interface, and front-panel indicators support program execution and direct machine integration within a self-contained control platform.
