The PRD-MZ40ASIz-32 is a digital servo drive produced by Kollmorgen as part of the Servostar CD Drives series. In automation cells, it functions as the power and control stage for Goldline submersible servomotors, translating high-level motion commands into regulated current vectors that generate precise torque. By coordinating motor phase excitation with resolver feedback, the drive supports tightly controlled speed and position loops required for pick-and-place, packaging, and general axis-control tasks. This closed-loop operation allows the drive to respond to changing loads while maintaining the commanded motion profile.
The drive communicates with motion controllers through the SERCOS fiber-optic bus, allowing deterministic setpoint transfer that aligns with the current-loop refresh time of 62.5 µs. The PWM stage modulates phase voltage at 16 kHz, maintaining fine control while keeping switching losses moderate. Continuous armature current is limited to 3 A RMS, yet the power section can supply a transient peak of 9 A RMS for 500 ms to handle acceleration or shock loads. The speed regulator updates every 250 µs, while the position regulator updates every 500 µs. These separate update intervals allow commanded profiles to remain accurate when rapid mechanical changes occur.
Protective circuits shut down the drive if the heat sink reaches 80 °C, if the DC link exceeds 430 VDC, or if it falls below 90 VDC. These limits help prevent semiconductor damage during abnormal operating conditions. The control electronics use an external 24 V supply, which allows the communication node to remain active for diagnostics when mains power is isolated. The enclosure measures 256.0 mm high, 67.3 mm wide, and 163.0 mm deep, allowing multiple units to be mounted side by side in a narrow cabinet bay. Its mass of 1.61 kg supports rail installation without additional structural supports. Motor feedback signals are routed through a dedicated connector to the drive’s high-speed regulators.
