The PRD-B040SAIz-A3 is a digital servo amplifier manufactured by Kollmorgen for the Servostar CD Drives series. The module conditions DC bus power for three-phase sinusoidal excitation of brushless motors and closes current, velocity, and position loops for coordinated motion axes. Resolver feedback is processed internally, allowing the drive to synchronize field orientation with the rotor angle while executing high-bandwidth control tasks. In packaging, material handling, or electronics assembly applications, it converts reference signals from a host controller into precise phase currents that move the load along programmed trajectories.
The current loop operates at 62.5 µs (16 kHz), meaning the drive recalculates phase duty cycles every 62.5 microseconds to minimize error and keep torque ripple low. The analog command port withstands a differential voltage of up to 13 V, providing headroom for offset or calibration, while its minimum sensitivity of 1.53 mV captures fine reference changes. Closed-loop speed accuracy reaches 0.01%, so a 3,000 rpm setpoint deviates by no more than 0.3 rpm under a steady load. To protect the DC link, an overvoltage threshold of 430 VDC disconnects the bridge, while an undervoltage trip operates at 90 VDC. The maximum commutation frequency is 400 Hz, allowing the drive to operate motors with high electrical pole counts at elevated mechanical speeds.
The position regulator refreshes at 500 µs (2 kHz), giving the motion controller two thousand corrections per second for tight path following. When a remote encoder is connected through the AUX interface, its lines have an input impedance of 100 Ω, limiting signal reflections over long cable runs. Monitor and diagnostic functions use an analog output with 4.9 mV increments and 12-bit resolution, which is suitable for capturing small velocity or torque variations. A fault relay rated at 1 A at 24 VDC can operate an external contactor or alarm lamp. The digital outputs can source up to 60 mA for status indicators.
