Product Description:
The PRD-B040EAIB-32 is a single-axis servo drive produced by Kollmorgen within the CD Servostar CD Drives series. Installed between the DC bus supply and a brushless motor, the device uses vector algorithms to regulate phase current so automated transport, packaging, or material-forming equipment can follow speed or torque commands with high accuracy. Its role is to translate low-level control signals into controlled power that keeps machine motion stable under changing load conditions.
The drive delivers a continuous output of 3 A; during short overloads, it can supply up to 6 A for two seconds and 9 A for 500 milliseconds, allowing fast acceleration without oversizing the power stage. Current is modulated by pulse-width switching at 16 kHz, a frequency that shifts switching harmonics above most audible ranges and keeps motor heating low. An analog control interface accepts ±10 V speed or torque references from PLC motion cards, while the resolver on the motor returns absolute shaft angle for commutation and feedback. Control electronics draw from a dedicated 24 VDC logic rail that is electrically isolated from the power bus, and an external 10 A fuse provides primary overcurrent protection on the incoming line. The output waveform is sinusoidal, which minimizes torque ripple and improves acoustic performance in precision axes.
Protective thresholds shut down the drive if the heat sink reaches 80 °C, if the internal DC bus rises above 430 VDC, or if it falls below 90 VDC, guarding both semiconductors and connected motors. The aluminum housing stands 256.0 mm tall, 67.3 mm wide, and 163.0 mm deep, so multiple units can be mounted side by side on a back panel with modest spacing for airflow. The unit has a mass of 1.61 kg, allowing installation on light sheet-metal enclosures without extra support brackets. Screw terminals carry the resolver signals through shielded twisted pairs, and dedicated connectors simplify field wiring during installation.
