The PRD-B040ASIB-32 is a digital servo drive produced by Kollmorgen within the CD Servostar CD Drives series. Designed as a panel-mount amplifier for the company’s Goldline submersible servomotors, it converts a DC bus into high-frequency, pulse-width-modulated phases that regulate torque, speed, and position in automated machinery such as seal-less pumps and test stands. By pairing resolver feedback with fast internal control loops, the unit delivers closed-loop motion control while communicating with a master controller through a fiber-optic SERCOS ring.
The analog input channel is decoded with 14-bit resolution, so the drive can translate ±10 V references into fine torque commands. Motion profiles and diagnostics are exchanged over the SERCOS interface, while the internal power stage supplies a continuous motor current of 3 A RMS. Current regulation is refreshed every 62.5 µs, velocity regulation every 250 µs, and position regulation every 500 µs; these update rates allow smooth control of low-inductance servomotors. Drive logic is energized by an external 24 VDC supply that keeps the controller active during main-bus shutdowns, and the supply can withstand a 2.6 A surge during startup. A fault relay rated at 1 A is provided to signal protective shutdowns to upstream control circuits.
For transient demands, the amplifier can generate 6 A RMS for two seconds and 9 A RMS for half a second before returning to its continuous rating. The power section switches at 16 kHz, minimizing audible noise and current ripple, and releases up to 60 W of heat that must be removed by cabinet airflow. Bus monitoring trips at 430 VDC to protect the IGBTs from incoming surges and at 90 VDC to prevent undervoltage commutation faults. The separate trip thresholds allow the controller to respond to excessive and insufficient bus voltage without interrupting the auxiliary supply. Resolver feedback continues to provide rotor-position data while the drive regulates the connected motor through these changing load and bus conditions.
