The PRD-B040AAIB-63 is a servo drive produced by Kollmorgen for the Servostar CD Drives series. In an automation cell, it interfaces between a DC bus and a brushless motor, converting bus energy into precisely modulated phase currents so axes can accelerate, decelerate, and hold position under closed-loop control. Its analog interface accepts velocity or torque commands from a PLC or motion controller, while resolver feedback returns the rotor position in real time to complete the control loop. This arrangement allows the drive to regulate motor movement while responding to changes in command signals and mechanical load.
The drive delivers a continuous output of 6 A rms and can sustain up to 18 A rms for 500 ms to handle dynamic load changes. Power is drawn from a nominal bus of 325 VDC. If the bus rises to 430 VDC, the overvoltage trip disables output gating to protect internal devices. Pulse-width modulation occurs at 8 kHz, producing a sinusoidal waveform that limits acoustic noise and torque ripple. The current regulator refreshes every 62.5 µs, and the commutation algorithm tracks the rotor angle at frequencies up to 400 Hz. A 0.25-second soft-start circuit precharges the DC link to minimize inrush current. Internal power dissipation is 80 W, so the panel must provide enough ventilation to remove the resulting heat. The resolver interface provides the absolute shaft angle without relying on an optical encoder.
The position loop closes every 500 µs, allowing coordinated motion profiles with neighboring axes. Thermal monitoring activates when the heat sink reaches 80 °C, while electronic protection shuts down the drive if ambient or load conditions exceed safe limits. The chassis has a mass of 2.22 kg and mounts directly to a backplate without additional brackets. A separate 300 V logic supply powers the digital signal processor, gate drivers, and analog front ends. This separate supply allows the control electronics to remain energized long enough to process and report a fault if the main bus collapses.
