The BDS3-230/12-01-240 servo drive is manufactured by Kollmorgen and belongs to the BDS Industrial Servo Drives series. Designed for cabinet-mounted motion systems, the unit converts a rectified DC bus into three-phase AC power that precisely regulates brushless servo motors used in pick-and-place stations, indexing tables, and packaging axes. It acts as an amplifier that tracks the reference signal from a host controller while protecting the motor and power supply through internal current limits and voltage monitoring.
The drive can deliver a continuous phase current of 12 A, based on the thermal limits of the IGBT module and heat sink. Energy is drawn from a regulated internal bus held at 300 VDC. This bus is produced from a three-phase mains input, and the ±10% input-voltage range allows operation on utility lines that deviate from the nominal voltage. The pulse-width inverter produces a line-to-line output of 200 VAC, which is maintained within a separate ±10% tolerance to match standard servo motor windings. A carrier frequency of 4 kHz establishes the switching period, balancing acoustic noise with current-loop bandwidth. The control electronics operate from a dedicated 115 VAC single-phase supply, and the reference port accepts ±8 V for bidirectional torque commands. The current-monitor terminal provides an output of 1 V per 2.625 A, simplifying in-circuit diagnostics.
During dynamic motion, the amplifier can supply an intermittent phase current of 20 A for bursts lasting up to 5 s. The control logic enforces a 30% duty limit to keep the power semiconductor temperature within safe operating limits. Up to six drives may be connected to a common PSR3 supply section, allowing one rectifier to feed multiple axes without excessive cabling. The chassis includes a heat sink and weighs 20 lb, making it suitable for cabinet mounting. After each peak-current event, the control logic returns the drive to its continuous operating level before another surge is permitted.
